Welcome. I'm so glad you're here.
My studio sits in Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the shores of Lake Superior, where I've lived and worked as an artist for twenty years. This landscape has shaped both my life and my work. It continues to inspire me every day through its changing light, expansive skies, restless water, and ever-shifting seasons.
Much of my work begins outdoors, painting directly from observation, but it truly develops here in the studio. This is where memories, sketches, and impressions come together. I'm less interested in recreating a particular place than I am in capturing how it feels to be there. The moment when a landscape moves beyond what we see and becomes something we experience is what continues to inspire my paintings.
I work primarily in oil and acrylic on wood panel, building each painting through layers of transparent and opaque colour. Over time, these layers create depth, atmosphere, and movement, reflecting the effects of wind, water, temperature, and light. While my work is rooted in the natural world, I often allow colour to move beyond what is expected, creating landscapes that feel both familiar and open to interpretation.
Throughout my career, I've enjoyed working at many different scales. Alongside my studio paintings, I've created murals and public art installations, experiences that have deepened my appreciation for how art can transform a space. Whether a painting is small enough to hold closely or large enough to surround you, my goal is always the same: to create work that invites you to slow down, look carefully, and connect with the landscape in a meaningful way.
Although I am primarily self-taught, I've had the privilege of studying with artists whose guidance has helped shape my practice. My work has been exhibited in galleries, public spaces, and private collections throughout Canada and the United States.
Since founding Elizabeth Howe Studios in 1989, this space has also become a place of teaching and mentorship. Supporting artists throughout their own creative journeys has been one of the greatest rewards of my career, and sharing what I've learned continues to inspire my own work.
